Raio de Sol will be a Community Centre of Education for Sustainable Development in Baucau, East Timor. Our mission is to build the capacity of Baucau’s community for local self sufficiency through development of infrastructure, education and skill sharing.
We propose the building of a Community Centre that can act as a demonstration site for Urban Permaculture systems and techniques that are adapted to the daily necessities of Baucau’s community.
Making information about accessible and sustainable livelihood available, we aspire to promote a wider self-sufficiency at the local resources level. This centre will be simultaneously a meeting place for community development projects, as well as vocational training, sensitisation, handcraft workshops and community gathering activities for different age groups. Through a warm and friendly environment and the use of natural materials, we wish to create a propitious atmosphere for learning and creative expression.
We have as a goal to get the local community involved in all the different phases of the project, construction, maintenance and bringing the space to life.
The legacy will be given to the community and to the entities that host us who, by keeping the guidelines of sustainability, can make the best possible use of the space. We will monitor and make direct contributions to the project for a 3-year period and we will be open for new projects that can be born after the centre is built.
This centre will be a contribution to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005/14.
